Over time, technology has influenced how we build and maintain friendships. And with recent developments in AI technology, we now have generative AI chatbots that can conduct what feels like a very real conversation. While this can be entertaining and helpful, it can also cause people to develop emotional connections with chatbots. But is this OK? In this lesson, students will grapple with this question, reflecting upon what makes human friendships special and unique.

- Reflect upon the unique benefits of human friendships.
What you'll need
Before the lesson
We suggest teaching the following two lessons first, as they help set a foundational understanding of how AI works.
Step by step
- Ask: What are the qualities of a good friend? (Slide 4)
Invite students to share. Slide 5 has sample responses that students can add to.
- Say: 皇冠足球体育 friendship is unique and special, and the ways we interact and share can vary from person to person. And thanks to phones and apps, there are a lot of ways to connect with friends, even when we can't be together face to face. (Slide 6).
- Say: New advances in technology have introduced AI chatbots, which are computer programs or apps that use AI technology to respond to what you say in real time. (Slide 7).
- Ask: Have you ever interacted with an AI chatbot? Why might people interact with an AI chatbot? (Slide 8).
Invite students to share their experiences and reflect on reasons why an AI chatbot might be useful. Slide 9 has sample responses that students can add to.
- Read through the Am AI Your Friend? scenario and discussion questions on Slides 10–16.
Have students complete the questions with a partner, and then invite students to share out. Use Slides 10–16 to guide the discussion, or refer to the Teacher Version of the handout.
Optional: Distribute the Am AI Your Friend? handout and have students complete their reflections individually.
- Say: While AI chatbots can support us in meaningful and important ways, it's important to be cautious about relying on them too much, as they can't replace human friendships. What makes friendships unique is that they aren't one-sided, and they certainly aren't perfect. Being able to disagree with someone and making mistakes are important aspects to being a friend, and a human. (Slide 17).
